Though it may sound cliché, thinking "outside the box" was integral to success for Michelle Kelly in implementing MyChart Bedside, a tablet-based app that provides patient families at American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH) in Madison, Wisconsin, with real-time information about their child's health and care plan during their hospital stay. In this case, getting outside the box meant seeking fresh perspectives from outside the hospital walls.
"Don't be afraid to think outside the box, and collaborate with those outside the health care system," says Kelly, M.D., pediatric hospitalist and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. "Having human factors and systems engineers come in was immensely helpful for us in developing MyChart Bedside. And don't be afraid to include patients and families in the process."
