On April 11, CHA sent a letter to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) with recommendations for its upcoming draft pediatric health information technology (HIT) certification criteria. Under 21st Century Cures, the Department of Health and Human Services, through the ONC, must develop voluntary certification criteria for pediatric HIT vendors before the end of 2018.
The letter, developed in consultation with children’s hospitals’ chief information officers, focuses on needed pediatric electronic health record (EHR) elements that will support high-quality care throughout the care continuum. It emphasizes the vital role that a pediatric-focused EHR can/should play in:
- Promoting children’s health.
- Care coordination.
- Information exchange between patients, families and providers, among providers, and with local, state, and federal agencies
- The overall quality of health care for children and their families.
