Engage Patients in Hand Hygiene With an Autograph Card

“Can I have your autograph?”

One of the strategies Children’s Hospital Colorado uses to engage patients in safety is a handwashing autograph card. All inpatients receive an autograph card with instructions. When patients see a team member—anyone from a housekeeper to a respiratory therapist—wash their hands, they ask them to sign their hand printout. Once a patient has five signatures, he or she calls down to Seacrest Studios and wins a prize. This gives patients the opportunity to positively reinforce their caregivers’ hand hygiene, and also incentivizes them to remind staff members in a non-confrontational way: “When I see you wash your hands, can I get your autograph so I can get a prize?”
