Mark Scheurer is a pediatric cardiac intensivist at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children’s Hospital in Charleston. He’s also part of the Children’s Heart Program of South Carolina, a network of pediatric cardiology providers and outreach centers throughout the state, offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care to all children in the state and surrounding regions. This partnership—and the people in it—have shown Scheurer the power everyone has to lead, no matter where they are or what their role.
“Everybody has an opportunity to lead where they stand,” says Scheurer, M.D., chief, Children's & Women's Services, Medical University of South Carolina. “Good leaders defer to local leaders who understand the issues better than they do.”
This lies at the center of the Children’s Heart Program of South Carolina. The program’s mission is to deliver the highest-level outcomes for patients using a collaborative approach. Through this virtual model, patients can receive care from pediatric cardiologists close to home—and if they need a surgery or procedure, the team at MUSC can perform it. The partnership would not work without the close collaboration and expertise of all the local care providers across the region, according to Scheurer.
