High-Intensity Neurologic Impairment Codes

High-intensity neurologic impairment (HI-NI) codes can be used to identify neurological diagnoses that are reasonably expected to last 12 months and result in significant functional impairments requiring subspecialty medical care.

Specifically, HI-NI includes conditions that:

  • Involves the central and/or peripheral nervous system
  • Can be reasonably expected to last at least 12 months (unless death intervenes)
  • Results in systemic and/or multi-system physiologic impairment requiring pediatric specialty care
