Using Telemedicine for Pediatric Behavioral Health Services

Long travel times, unfamiliar clinical settings, and a lack of providers are barriers to mental health care for children in rural communities. Children’s Hospital & Medical Center is partnering with primary care clinics throughout Nebraska to provide telepsychiatry to youth across the area, recruit and retain skilled providers who do not live in the same area as the hospital, and create flexible scheduling so that children from different sites can be seen in the same day. This initiative is improving quality care and numbers of lives touched, as well as introducing telemedicine to the hospital.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe telepsychiatry development steps.
  • Identify reimbursement solutions and describe keys to program maintenance.
  • Discuss opportunities for program growth and evolution.
