Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) PLS Course Detail

Course description:

The Centers for Disease Control has identified autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as the fastest growing developmental disability in the nation, with one in 59 children living in Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM) sites identified as being affected by the disorder. Children with autism may present challenges to the health care provider due to communication and behavioral issues (as well as frequent co-occurring diagnoses). For example, children with autism have a higher incidence of complications and longer hospital stays. By recognizing the characteristics of children on the autism spectrum, and learning and utilizing support strategies, the clinician can improve outcomes and shorten hospital stays.

Course Objectives

  • Define and outline the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
  • Outline the six areas of characteristics and impairment associated with ASD and how they present in a wide spectrum.
  • Recognize and anticipate potential issues/triggers that may lead to anxiety and/or challenging behavior in the patient with autism.
  • Define and differentiate the various evidence-based tools, practices and strategies used to provide effective communication and behavioral support of the patient with autism.
