4 Tips for Hand Hygiene Compliance Success

2015 Pediatric Quality Award Semifinalist Arkansas Children’s Hospital improved hand hygiene compliance from a baseline of 73 percent to 95 percent and saw a 12.5 percent drop in hospital-acquired infections.

Here’s how the organization got results:

  • Gain leadership’s commitment. Designate and prioritize hand hygiene as a primary safety initiative.
  • Educate and train. Hang signs, use data, provide feedback, and talk about it at new employee orientation sessions.
  • Consider supplies. Work with frontline staff members and environmental services teams to optimize hand hygiene product choice, placement and restocking.
  • Provide updates. Share compliance data with staff members and hand hygiene champions.
