Children's National Medical Center - Policy for Identification of Obesity

  1. All patients admitted have weight and height measured and BMI calculated.
  2. All overweight and obese patients have a dietary order placed in Cerner (EMR) to specifically order a diet that conforms to the "MyPlate" national guidelines.
  3. For patients under 9 year with BMI >25 kg/m2, or patients > 9 years with BMI>30 kg/m2 (Cerner does not calculate BMI %) the patient is flagged, and the primary inpatient puts in a consult to the Inpatient Obesity Consult Team (IOCT) via email or voicemail.
  4. The IOCT then sees the patient and if there are any additional concerns (severe obesity +/- comorbidities), the IOCT will then involve the other subspecialty teams as necessary (e.g. GI, Orthopedics, PT, etc), and will set up the patient's outpatient follow-up with the Children's National Weight Management Clinic (IDEAL Clinic).
