CHA submitted comments to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on possible changes to the inflation index used to annually update the federal poverty threshold. The letter emphasizes that more than 300,000 children could lose their Medicaid or CHIP coverage after 10 years under two of the index options under consideration by OMB.
The comment letter urges OMB to not move forward with any change in the index until it:
- undertakes in-depth research, including the solicitation of public comments through the formal rule-making process, about the impact on vulnerable populations
- identifies a more accurate poverty metric that takes into account out-of-pocket medical costs and living expenses for low-income populations
CHA also joined with allied children’s organizations and the Partnership for Medicaid to submit joint comments to OMB.
