CHGME Resources and Research

GAO Report: Expansion of the CHGME program

On Sept. 18, President Trump signed H.R. 5385 into law, officially extending the Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program for five years. Children's hospitals thank congressional champions — Sens. Bob Casey and Johnny Isakson, and Reps. Gene Green and Michael C. Burgess — for their tireless leadership in reauthorizing this bipartisan, successful program.

CHA has developed several resources to help demonstrate the need for the program and additional funding. While summaries of a few key resources are below, please find full resources above.

  • In 2018, Dobson | DaVanzo issued a report that showed shortfalls persist in federal support for the training of pediatric providers. Current CHGME funding represents approximately half of Medicare support for training in general acute care teaching hospitals on a per-resident basis.

  • Data captured by the American Medical Association demonstrates that the majority of pediatric subspecialties are trained at children's hospitals that receive CHGME. In some fields — such as pediatric rehabilitation medicine — virtually all physicians receive their training at CHGME hospitals.
