Pediatric Residency Programs: Providing Holistic Care

Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children Residency Program

CHOP resident Casey Colman“My name is Casey Coleman, and I am a third-year pediatric resident at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Throughout my training, I have come to embrace just how important it is to support the whole family, to help them understand the diagnosis and how to manage at home, and to ensure they have connections to other needed services in the community. If we can take the extra time to empower the family with additional knowledge, we can hopefully avert a later trip to the Emergency Department.

Our patients come from different socioeconomic backgrounds all across the Delaware Valley. As the only pediatric residency program within the only children’s hospital in Delaware, we recognize the need to engage and volunteer in the communities that we serve.

In Philadelphia, we make site visits for new moms to discuss crib safety, visit WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) clinics, and volunteer to operate a resident-run clinic that provides free medical services to children in Delaware.

I chose this program because of the culture of education and the desire to make a difference in children’s lives. My colleagues and I are committed to being effective clinicians, and I have no doubt that we are well-prepared to become leaders in changing the health care landscape thanks to the richness of our residency program.”
