On Feb. 14, CHA joined allied behavioral health organizations in sending a letter to express our support for the Federal Communication Commission's proposed rule that outlines an implementation plan to designate 9-8-8 as the national number for mental health crises and suicide prevention. The proposed rule implements the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act of 2018. The letter expresses support for immediate implementation of the designated number to provide support for individuals in crisis. The letter also emphasizes the importance of an investment in not only simplified access to the crisis hotline, but also in the expansion of capacity to provide timely responses to mental health crises. In addition to the proposed rule, a handful of bills have been introduced aimed at setting quality standards and providing additional funding for the future 9-8-8 number.
