Neighborhoods Matter: Using the CHNA to Look at Place- and Race-Based Inequities in Child Opportunity

Children’s National Hospital (CNH) and The HSC Pediatric Health Care System are conducting a pediatric community health needs assessment (CHNA) to be released in June 2022. They believe that improving community health requires attention to both the clinical and non-clinical determinants of health, including important underlying barriers to health and well-being, such as racism and poverty. As they approach community health improvement efforts, they have shifted from a largely clinical focus to a more comprehensive approach that accounts for non-clinical drivers of health (often termed “social determinants of health”) for patients and communities.  Join us today to learn how their CHNA uses the Child Opportunity Index (COI) to focus on neighborhood-specific features – such as the quality of schools, access to healthy food, and employment rates – that impact a child’s opportunity to thrive.
