Through a policy and advocacy lens, learn how Children's National Health System (CNHS) is working to integrate maternal mental health screening throughout the hospital. CNHS hospital leadership identified perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) screening as an outcome measure for the institutional corporate goals, as PMADs are associated with poor health outcomes for infants and children. Identification and early intervention is imperative for successful treatment for the health of mothers, infants and families.
From a clinical perspective, an interdisciplinary primary care program at LaRabida Children’s Hospital for children with special healthcare needs has taken steps to address mental health concerns of the caregiver. They chose to focus on the infant and embed infant development therapists into the clinic. They provide therapy supporting parent child bonding and positive parenting strategies.
