Summary: Developed by the John Eisenberg Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality award recipients, this program is an evidence-based program to improve safety through family and inter-professional engagement in hospital communication. This session will address how to implement a nationally recognized Patient and Family Centered program to improve safety.

Description: Boston Children’s Hospital conducted a prospective multi-center, family-centered communication intervention study. This initiative was developed by a diverse team of physician, nurse, family researchers and educators across 10 North American hospitals with expertise in structured communication, family engagement, health literacy, curriculum development, learner assessment, process improvement, and patient safety. The intervention includes a health literacy-informed, structured communication framework for family-centered rounds; written rounds summaries for families; a training program; and strategies to support teamwork and implementation. The study measured errors and adverse events, family experience, and communication processes before and after intervention implementation.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe opportunities for better engaging patients, families, and inter-professional team members in multimodal hospital communication.
• Identify strategies for adapting a nationally recognized program to meet individual institutions' needs.
