National multi-year partnerships in pediatric sepsis yielding results in the Emergency Department
Several multi-year projects are improving sepsis patient outcomes in children’s hospitals. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Emergency Medicine’s (SOEM) Septic Shock Collaborative began as a survey of practice patterns. The SOEM joined Children’s Hospital Association in 2012 for a rapid cycle improvement project to achieve a more than two thirds reduction in sepsis mortality. Since 2013, 25 hospitals have been developing and testing a standardized trigger tool and implementation bundle for recognition and management of sepsis in the Emergency Department.
